Hazardous Materials Technician

Who needs this training?

A 24-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Hazardous Materials Technician is expected to respond aggressively to hazardous substance releases or potential releases to stop or control the release at its source. Under OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standard — specifically 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(iii) for general industry and 29 CFR 1926.65(q)(6)(iii) for construction — this training applies to hazardous materials technicians who operate at the offensive level of emergency response.

These Technicians must maintain annual refreshers to ensure competency and proficiency. Our HazMat Technician 8-hour course is designed to review all of the required topics to ensure you can effectively sustain competency as an OSHA HAZWOPER HazMat Technician.

How long is this training course?

OSHA requires a minimum of 8 hours worth of training at the hazardous materials level. Lonestar Safety Academy recommends conducting the course over 1 day but alternative scheduling can be discussed.

What does this course cover?

• An overview of regulatory agencies, historical incidents & their influence on the development of OSHA & the HAZWOPER rule

• Facility emergency response plans & implementation

• Classification, identification and verification of known and unknown materials by using field survey instruments and equipment.

• A review of the Incident Command System and how to implement its use

• Selection and use of chemical personal protective equipment (PPE)

• Hazard identification and risk assessment techniques

• Control, containment, and/or confinement operations

• Decontamination procedures

• Incident termination procedures & reporting

• Basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior

Course Costs

When delivered on-site, this training is in-person and tailored to each client. On average, it is $2,800/ day + expenses with a minimum headcount of 8 and a maximum of 20 students. We always seek to collaborate with you first to determine your needs, conduct a site survey and organzation plans/ policies review, and discuss any other requirements or needs you may have. This process allows us to ensure we can provide the most effective learning for your personnel while meeting the budgetary and timelines of your production and EH&S leadership’s expectations. A detailed Statement of Work is generated with a budget for your review and signature.
